Cromwell Democrats took a moment to celebrate and honor three community members for their contributions to the Cromwell community. Paula Luna was named the Cromwell Democrat of the Year, Jenn Lepore the Cromwell Young Democrat of the Year, and Shannon Hughes-Brown was recognized with the inaugural ‘Gaia McDermott Community Service Award,’ named for a committee member that passed earlier this year.
Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz attended the celebration to congratulate the honorees.
“I am honored to be here to celebrate three strong, women leaders here in Cromwell,” said Bysiewicz. “On behalf of myself and Governor Lamont, we say thank you for your contributions to your community and Connecticut.”
Paula was born, raised and educated here in Cromwell, and has lived here nearly her entire life. Paula is an active member of our Senior Center and volunteers with the Health Department and Cromwell Farmer’s Market. She serves as a member of the Town Council and describes it as an honor and humbling experience. She hopes to continue to serve the Town of Cromwell and its residents.
Jenn Lepore is a lifelong Cromwell resident and the current chair of the Cromwell Democratic Town Committee. She joined the DTC in 2018 and ran for Town Council the following year. In 2020, she became the treasurer for the DTC and in 2022, the chair. In 2022, she also served as the chair of the Charter Revision Committee leading to a successful revision of Cromwell's charter.
Shannon is an active community volunteer as a troop leader for a Cromwell Girl Scout troop and the vice chair of Cromwell Middle School Building Committee. She is also an ally and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender kids. Her advocacy work led to the creation of a Transgender and Non-binary student policy for Cromwell Public Schools.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor than Paula and Shannon and I am humbled to stand next to them and accept my own recognition,” said Jenn Lepore, chair of the Cromwell Democratic Town Committee. “Shannon and Paula give so much to our town and their efforts enhance Cromwell’s quality of life and make our community more welcoming for all.”
